Weekend round-up 17.9.07
There was high-scoring junior ice hockey action at the weekend, with two wins and a draw to celebrate across the age groups.
The Venom under-10s beat Sutton 16-0 at home, the under-16s Rockets tied 4-4 at Whitely Bay, and the under-18s Trojans enjoyed a 13-2 road victory at Coventry.
The Venom under-10s welcomed Sutton Sting for their first league encounter and the home side raced to an early lead with new player Joe Thomas feeding Aidan Tipton for an opening goal in just 17 seconds.
Sutton’s defence kept the Telford youngsters at bay until 3:59 when Deakan Fielder latched onto a poor clearance and pinged a shot in off the post. New this season Brodie Jesson scored four goals, with captain Corey Thompson-Howe, Aaron Jepson and Tipton taking it to 9-0 at half time.
The second period saw Sutton re-group and force Venom goalie Oli Johnson to work hard to maintain a clean sheet, but two more quick goals from spirit of the game winner Jordan Jolley, aided by Rio Robinson, gave the Venom kids some relief.
Fielder scored from Beth Nickless and Shannon Douglas, and Tipton’s pass across the net found Thompson-Howe in position for goal 13. Jepson assisted Jesson to his fifth of the day before Michael Arundel directed a Gareth Gower piledriver inside the post. Fielder wrapped up the game with his hat trick goal, taking the final score to 16-0.
Manager Gordon Douglas said: “Whilst the result is impressive for us, nothing can be taken away from the plucky and determined Sutton side who never gave up and pushed and battled for the whole game.”
The under-16s Rockets came out of a rewarding summer tournament schedule eager to get off to a good start in Whitley Bay. Mike Steventon was successful at 3:04, ripping a slapshot past the Tomahawk netminder. Whitley rallied and in less than a minute Jack Watkins had equalised with a high net goal. The pace of the game never slowed, and with just nine seconds remaining of the first period Callum Taylor slotted home the puck from a Luke Brittle pass.
The second period opened as the first had closed, with both teams eager to attack the goal area. Whitley equalised at 17:48, but some excellent defensive work from James Warman and Dan Harrison denied them further chances.
Determined play from Ryan Twardun, Adam Taylor, Declan O’Mara and Edward Eaton offered more incursions into the Whitley end and, after sustained pressure, Brittle again made a perfect pass to find Paul Rigby ready to convert for 3-2.
Whitley brought the scores level within the first minute of the final period, but Brittle pushed the Rockets ahead once again, assisted by Steventon. Telford were hanging on for the win, with shots raining down on goalie Ben Hunt, but Watkins picked up his personal hat trick to tie the game 4-4 with seven minutes remaining. The spirit of the game award went to Andrew Whitehouse.
The under-18s Trojans travelled to the Coventry Skydome for their second league game of the season, and took control of the game from the start. The Shropshire lads rattled Coventry into an undisciplined match where they took an hour of penalties and only managed to penetrate the Telford defence at the end of the second and third periods.
Telford took their feet off the gas halfway through the game, but still ran out 13-2 winners. Highlights of the game included Tim Burrows picking up four goals, and Dan Taylor scoring a natural hat trick in just 24 seconds. Other scorers were Mike Steventon (2), Owen Williams, Josh Brown, Paul Kennedy and Gareth Ellis.
