Game with Sheffield Rapiers at Telford
Saturday 24.11.07 FO 15.15 - 3x 15 minute Periods.
The return game this Saturday was eagerly awaited by our ice warriors from Telford.
Having beaten the Rapiers at Sheffield Ice 5-3 three weeks ago we were certain they would be out for revenge.
The battle is on between the Rapiers and the Rockets to make that second place to go to the National playoffs at the end of the season. Nottingham have made an impressive start playing 6 games with 6 wins.
On their current form they will could win top spot - who will be second??
The game started well and the Rapiers came out very strong to take that win, but the Rockets were not going to lie down. Unfortunately the Rapiers started to take penalties midway through the first period and gave the Rockets a chance to go ahead. A power play goal after 9 minutes by Michael Steventon assisted by Luke Brittle saw the game take a nasty turn.
The Referee tried to take control of the game as the teams took on board a high number of penalties.
The Sheffield net minder was taken out of the game at 13.43 for a major infringement and received a match penalty for his action. With just over a 1 minute to go before the end of the first period the players were sent off to cool off.
The 1 minute remaining from the 1st period was played out and then a change of ends saw the teams face off again.
Into battle once again. The flavour of the game remained the same. More penalties was the order of play with Telford clocking up 8 minutes but the Rapiers could not take advantage of any of the power plays as the Rockets tightened up at the back. The Rockets hung on to that one goal lead at the end of the second period.
During the third period the Rapiers went into a 2-1 lead very early on, at 33.04 and 48 seconds later.
Paul Rigby assisted by Luke Brittle quickly made it 2 all at 34.11. Three goals in just 65 seconds.
The game was not very pretty to watch as more penalties were racked up by both sides.
Paul Rigby taking a 5+20 for tripping + game misconduct.
It looked as if the Rapiers were going to win as they scored again with only 2 minutes to go making it 3-2.
But the Rockets had not finished - Ryan Twardun tied the game at 3 all with only 35 seconds remaining on the clock.
A great solo effort from Mike Steventon clinched the game for the Rockets with 12 seconds to go.
Another defeat was staring the Rapiers in the face - all hell let loose as 3 Sheffield players clocked up 69 penalty minutes at 44.38 Although we were out shot Telford came away the winners at 4-3.
Congratulations goes to Ben Hunt who had to manage 42 shots on goal compared with 12 +13 on the 2 keepers from Sheffield.
Penalty minutes - what a score,!!! hopefully not to be seen again. Telford 49 Sheffield 152.
This win puts Telford firmly in second place, 3 points above Sheffield with a game in hand.
Our next home game against Nottingham is this coming Saturday 1st December FO 15.15.
