U10s Saintly defeat
31st Dec, 2007
Shropshires youngest Ice Hockey stars were keen to finish the year on a high after defeating the Flintshire Raptors the previous weekend and having beat Solihull earlier in the year they were keen to make it 2 wins out of 2. The Saints travelled up to Telford short-handed and forfeited the game to Telford 5 0 and a challenge match took place.
It was obvious from the outset that Telford were not going to get the challenge win easily and the 1st line were in for a hectic afternoon against the 5ft9" Solihull 9 year old Foday Nabay!!! The Telford 2nd and 3rd lines battled away and created a number of chances through Jesson, Jepson and Jolly, but it was the impressive Nabay who opened the scoring for the Saints. Telford responded quickly with Jesson picking up a pass from Joe Thomas to break through and equalise. The Venom continued to push but could not get a second and the first period ended in stalemate.
The second period started cagely with both teams probing without creating any opportunities. Beth Nickless then latched onto a loose Solihull pass and broke away and under pressure from the Saints defense managed to get a shot away, which slid under the advancing netminder. Nabay was then allowed some room and he took the chance to tie the game again. A great second line move saw Thomas release Jesson who took of down the wing before cutting in and rifling a shot at goal. The Saints netminder could only parry it and their was Jepson to poke home the puck. Not to be outdone Nabay made the most of some slick passing to grab his hat-trick, then with the Venom 1st line circling the dominating Saint forward the rest of their team took advantage to take the lead. The Venom pushed forward to get the tie, but Nabay took adavantage of the spaces at the back to go forward and grab the Saints 5th and this was quickly followed by their 6th. Thompson-Howe then scored one of his trademark solo goals to pull the game back to a 2 goal deficit, but for the sustained pressure no more goals came and Solihull held out for a 6 4 win...Telford coach Neil Jepson quoting "the kids played well and did not deserve to lose the game, but one Solihull player did make a difference"
Spirit of the game for Telford went to Brodie Jesson for his efforts on second line and a notable mention to Jordan Jones for his clean sheet as 3rd line netminder..
Next up for the 10s is a tricky away tie at high flying Nottingham on the 12th of January followed by a home tie on the 19th of January against Coventry.
