10s mauled by Pumas
5th Feb, 2008
Telfords Under 10's Ice Hockey team travelled to Nottingham's Olympic ice arena to play the high flying Nottingham Puma's. The Puma's having already scored over 100 goals in their previous 8 fixtures whilst only conceeding 12 (9 of them against Sheffield) was always going to be a tough game...
This was the case and the Venom were on the back skate from the outset. The more experienced Nottingham team breaking the deadlock on 1.24 with Kelsall pouncing on a rebounded shot from Mercer. Gower and Douglas on 1st line Defence were in for a long afternoon against the impressive Puma forward line. A second goal came not long after this followed by 3 and 4 scored on the second line first shift. The dogged 3rd line with Taylor and Robinson at the back kept a clean sheet on their first shift of the afternoon and Jolly made a break to give the Venom youngsters some hope, but a very well drilled and capable Puma defence dealt with it. Oli Johnson between the pipes must have felt like he was keeping net at the Alamo as the relentless Puma's worked to add to their
goal tally. The first period ending at 11 0 to the Puma's.
The break offered little respite and despite Sinclair and Price's best efforts on 2nd line D the Puma's added 4 goals after the break. The Venom's brief breaks into the Puma's half were few and far between offering little breathing time for the telford D. Then on 32.59 the impressive Parker played a pass through that split the Nottingham D wide open allowing Jesson to break through on goal. He did not spurn the chance and blasted it high into the Nottingham net, giving the travelling Telford support something to cheer about...
The Puma's added 3 more after this to finish the game 27 1 winners.
The spirit of the game for Telford went to Netminder Oli Johnson who faced 79 shots on a very busy afternoon...
