TJIHC Golf Open
25th Aug, 2008
On Sunday the 24th of August, members and friends of the Telford Junior Ice Hockey club took to the lush green fairways of the Horsehay Village Golf Centre for the annual TJIHC Golf Open, with the aim to raise funds for the season ahead. On arrival the players were fed and watered, with a few taking on board some dutch courage to get them round the 18 holes that were to follow. With the sun on the players backs the golfers (this term being used in the loosest possible way) stepped onto the 1st Hole which had been sponsored by Sliders Skate Shop. The first 4 balls were launched and it was obvious from these that the fairways would not take much punishment and that the players would need strimmers as opposed to fairway irons. There was also word of bandits being in the area, which proved to be true when Gringo Jesson complete with Spurs, Sombrero and handlebar moustache, just fell short of driving the first green (18 handicap, yeh right!). 4 hours and about a dozen lost balls later the 19th hole was reached for a welcome refreshment or two and the prize giving. Nearest the pin on the 8th hole was won by Dave Fielder senior, who was the only player to make the green sweat never mind the pin. Nearest the pin on the 16th hole was won by Gogs Douglas for a shot that fell short and left, but took a couple of kindly bounces before rolling up to pin high. A true case of using the course to your advantage, or more likely just being jammy. The prize for getting your money worth on the course was won by Steve Nickless. Steve working to the philosophy that if I don't hit it very far I won't lose my ball. At the business end of the prize giving it was tight with Gringo Jesson handing in a card with 35 points on it. Then stepped in Hustler Taylor (honest, I have never played in years) also with 35 points. With the count taking place on who had the better inward 9 the bar doors swung open and in stepped Roger 'El Bandito' Gower, who had just tied his horse up outside. With his spurs creating sparks as he walked, he handed over his card with 36 points circled. The winner and the recipient of the £50 prize...The total monies raised was over £200, so a big thanks to the hole sponsors; Sliders Skate Shop, Givara, DM Parton Plumbing & Heating, Harwood Est Agents, Jones & Hampton and Telford Vehicle Services. Also Samsung and Tesco for the nearest the pin prizes.
